FAQ’s

01

How long does it take to be fitted with Ortho-K?

The process typically spans 3-4 weeks and includes around five mandatory appointments. This level of commitment is crucial to guarantee both the procedure’s success and your safety.

The fitting process starts with an introductory lesson on contact lenses, after which custom lenses are ordered, arriving in about two weeks. During your next visit to the optometrist, the lenses and their initial fitting will be evaluated. This is followed by a thorough session on how to insert and remove the lenses, with additional sessions as needed based on your progress. To ensure safety, you won’t be allowed to take the lenses home until you can proficiently insert and remove them. Once you’ve mastered this, an appointment will be set for the morning after your first night of wearing the lenses. This allows the optometrist to check the immediate effects and confirm that the procedure is proceeding as planned. If all goes well, you can continue using Ortho-K lenses at home, returning for follow-up appointments as recommended by your optometrist.

02

Are Ortho-K lenses just for children?

Ortho-K lenses are not just for children; they can be used by adults as well. The primary purpose of Ortho-K lenses is to temporarily reshape the cornea to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), allowing for clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or regular contact lenses.

For children, Ortho-K lenses are particularly beneficial because they can help slow the progression of myopia, which tends to worsen during childhood and adolescence. By wearing these lenses overnight, children can potentially reduce the rate at which their myopia increases, thereby lowering the risk of developing high myopia, which is associated with more severe eye health issues later in life.

For adults, Ortho-K lenses offer an alternative to LASIK surgery or daily wear contact lenses and glasses. Adults who lead active lifestyles or those who work in environments where glasses or regular contact lenses may be inconvenient or impractical might find Ortho-K lenses to be a suitable option. The procedure and effects are similar for adults and children, though the primary difference lies in the goals: for children, it’s often about controlling myopia progression, while for adults, it’s about achieving convenient, clear daytime vision without surgery.

03

How much does Ortho-K cost?

The myopia management journey starts with a Consultation & Advanced Eye Examination to determine the best options for your or your child’s eyes. If Ortho-K is deemed suitable, there will be an initial fee, followed by a monthly care and product Direct Debit, which continues for the duration of the treatment under our care. The minimum commitment for this Myopia Management plan is 18 months. If you expect to be in the area for a shorter period, please contact us directly.

04

How long does it take for Ortho-K to work?

The effects of wearing Ortho-K lenses can start to become noticeable anywhere from one night to two weeks, depending on the individual. It’s important to note that adjustments might be necessary to achieve the desired clinical outcome with Ortho-K lenses. This need for potential alterations is one reason why new Ortho-K clients must attend several appointments during the fitting process.

05

Will my glasses still work with Ortho-K?

Ortho-K lenses and regular prescription glasses serve different purposes and are not compatible. Ortho-K lenses reshape the cornea overnight, improving vision and eliminating the need for daytime corrective aids. Consequently, your regular glasses won’t function correctly after you’ve removed the Ortho-K lenses, as they are not calibrated for your temporarily reshaped cornea.

If you decide to stop using Ortho-K lenses, your eyes will gradually return to their original state over approximately two weeks. If your glasses prescription remains accurate, you can resume wearing them as you did before starting Ortho-K treatment.

06

I’m already an Ortho-K wearer, do I need a fitting appointment?

Yes, you will need a full eye health assessment before we can provide any optical appliances or devices. However, if you can provide the exact specifications of your current Ortho-K lenses along with your uncorrected prescription and follow-up results, it may expedite the fitting process. If your lenses are from one of our manufacturers, the fitting may be even quicker. Typically, a complete refit is necessary, requiring a 2-4 week “wash out” period without wearing Ortho-K lenses to reset your vision. Unless you need additional training for inserting and removing the lenses, you may be able to take your lenses home sooner than new Ortho-K users.
