Specialist Services

At Eyediology, we offer a range of specialist services. These services are typically recommended by optometrists or requested via specialist referrals for comprehensive eye care and aid in accurate diagnosis.

Dilated Retinal Exam

A dilated retinal exam uses eye drops to widen the pupils, allowing the Optometrist to thoroughly examine the retina and optic nerve for signs of disease or damage.

Cycloplegic Refraction

Cycloplegic refraction involves administering eye drops to paralyse the ciliary muscle temporarily, preventing the eye from focusing. This allows for accurate measurement of refractive errors by eliminating accommodation effects.

Goldman Pressure Test

A Goldmann pressure test measures intraocular pressure using a tonometer. The device gently contacts the cornea after numbing drops, helping investigate conditions such as glaucoma by assessing eye pressure.

Dry Eye Assessment

A dry eye assessment evaluates tear production and quality, diagnosing dry eye syndrome. It involves tests like tear break-up time, Schirmer’s test, and examining the ocular surface with specialised dyes.

Estermann Visual Fields Test

An Estermann visual fields test assesses peripheral vision, particularly for driving fitness. It involves detecting light spots in various visual field areas, and identifying vision loss patterns and blind spots.

Blephex Eye Lid Exfoliation

Blephex is a procedure to remove debris and bacteria from the eyelid margins, improving hygiene and treating blepharitis, using a specialised, rotating micro-sponge device.

Cataract Assessment

A cataract assessment evaluates the clouding of the eye’s lens. It includes vision tests, slit-lamp examination, and dilation to determine the cataract’s impact and need for surgical intervention.

Digital Retinal Photography

Digital retinal photography captures high-resolution images of the retina, aiding in the detection and monitoring of eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma through detailed visual records.

Specialist tests may seem daunting, but they offer reassurance and peace of mind. By pinpointing potential issues early on, they enable timely intervention and effective management, ensuring optimal eye health. These tests empower individuals with knowledge and confidence in their eye care, promoting overall well-being.

Common Ocular Conditions

Common ocular conditions encompass a variety of eye disorders affecting vision and eye health. These include refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, as well as conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. Additionally, dry eye syndrome, conjunctivitis, and blepharitis are frequent ocular issues. For more information on some of these explore the tabs below.

Red Eye

Red eye indicates blood vessel dilation in the sclera. It can signify conjunctivitis, dryness, allergies, infections, or more serious conditions.

Tired Eye

Tired eyes feel strained and dry usually from prolonged concentrated tasks. The 20/20/20 rule suggests taking breaks every 20 minutes to look 20 feet away for 20 seconds to help rest those peepers.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism causes blurry or distorted vision due to irregular corneal shape. Symptoms include blurred vision, eyestrain, headaches, and squinting.

Floaters

Ocular floaters are small, shadowy shapes that drift across your vision caused by clumps in the vitreous gel. Many things can cause them.

Detached Retina

A detached retina occurs when the retina peels away from its normal position, leading to vision loss and requiring urgent treatment.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is age-related farsightedness, causing difficulty focusing on close objects due to the loss of elasticity in the eye’s lens.

Book an Eye Exam

If you’ve not had an eye examination in the last year it’s probably time to consider booking an eye examination.
